Lives in Los Angeles
Yasmine Amitai-Murro was born and raised in Israel. She moved to New York in her early 20’s to attend the New York Academy of Art and got a degree from Hunter College. That followed by a career in film editing before moving to Los Angeles and devoting fully to sculpture.
The works on view at Obra Gallery are at the core of Yasmine Amitai-Murro’s explorations. Her current work on physical and inner spaces, and previous series of crafted natural shapes.
In the spirit of botanical collections, the glazed porcelain Pods series reimagines forms and textures that appear natural, and catalogs them as specimens in glass cases. The juxtaposition of their fragility and uniqueness, the real and imaginary, establishes dialogues between nature and art as display artifacts.
The architecturally charged Dwellings series is created through a reverse sculpting method. With each piece revealing itself meticulously at the deconstruction of the initial positive space. In poetic discovery, the final excavation process in fact destroys the sculpture originally built.
An emotional weaving of Architecture and Archaeology allows the observer to meander through spaces reminiscent of modern and classical structures, both abstract and real. Some are constructed to be seen through, as the skin of buildings. Others invite to dwell in, spectators of scaled down temples.
