Who we are

OBRA is a design studio and gallery specializing in complete project design for buildings, interiors, and gardens.

OBRA was started in Brooklyn in 2015 by Roberto Sosa. The evolving studio is an extension of his core passion for design and multidisciplinary collaboration with clients and partners across residential and commercial projects. In 2020, OBRA opened in Los Angeles to service clients on the West Coast and Mexico. In 2023 the studio opened a gallery and retail component in Silver Lake.

  • OBRA is a Spanish word that represents the art of building and the process of design & creation.

  • Roberto launched Obra in 2015 from Brooklyn, NY and has since discovered and designed properties across the U.S. and Mexico. Whether it's a historic farmhouse in New York's Hudson Valley, a rustic farm-to-table restaurant in Harlem, a coastal estate in Santa Barbara or a traditional plantation cottage in Hawaii, Roberto effortlessly combines the individuality of his clients with classically modern design.

    Roberto attended the School of Architecture at the Ciudad Universitaria de Caracas, Venezuela where he was immersed in the strong legacy of Latin American modernism. While surrounded by the buildings of Carlos Raúl Villanueva, one of the most influential architects of the movement, Roberto developed the foundation for what would become the signature aesthetic of OBRA.

  • OBRA is powered by a multidisciplinary team of designers, artists, managers and tradespeople. The studio’s architectural foundation is rooted in Modernism and further defined by the global interests and backgrounds of its team members. Helmed by Roberto Sosa, OBRA is a dynamic and flexible design shop which tailors a unique and personal creative approach for each client.

Our Services

  • A scalable consultation service to support our clients in the earliest stage of investing. We provide professional advice based on our experience, vision and project scope.

  • Each project begins with a phase of discovery, research and inspiration. We carefully consider the property's location, geography and its architectural value. We determine the scope of the project and formulate a plan based on the client's needs and our experience.

  • As the design evolves into technical documents, we create a plan of execution, from permitting through construction documentation.

  • Taking inspiration from our favorite Modernist periods and styles we visualize and curate a palette for each space. We specialize in articulating the past in a renewed and elevated context, be that historic and classic renovations or contemporary construction.

  • Connects the selection of furniture, lighting, accessories, and art, as the final layers of the design process. We work directly with local makers and fabricators to deliver custom designed pieces and installations, executed to our designs and specifications.

  • Allows our team to oversee the implementation, scheduling and delivery of the project through completion.
